🎼 Concert organized by el Bote de Luz in collaboration with MaderaGuitarras
Classical music returns to el Bote de Luz. On 10 July, the Greek guitarist Ioanna Kazoglou offered us a splendid concert, taking us on a captivating journey through the history of the guitar repertoire.
The small audience was able to appreciate the depth and refinement of her style, her expressiveness, interpretative charisma, poetic and luminous sound, and the great technical precision that have enabled this young performer (born in 2003) to win some of the most significant prizes in the international classical-guitar calendar.
Kazoglou, who now resides in Germany, performed at el Bote de Luz the day after securing First Prize at the Ciudad de Málaga International Guitar Competition. This adds to the First Prize she obtained at the Athens International Guitar Festival last April and the Second Prize at the Puerto Rico World Guitar Festival in May.
Four months later, the Greek guitarist returns to Andalusia to take part in the Andrés Segovia International Classical Guitar Contest in La Herradura (Granada), which this year marks its 40th anniversary.
And scarcely will the echoes of the guitars have faded along the Granada coast before Kazoglou returns once more to el Bote de Luz, this time to immerse us in the musical world of Andrés Segovia (1893–1987), the most influential figure in the history of the guitar.
Segovia transformed the classical guitar by elevating it to the status of a true concert instrument. He refined its technique, adapted classical works, and forged an extensive repertoire through the pieces written under his influence, the transcriptions he made of works for other instruments, the music he composed himself, and the works he recorded and performed in recital. His teaching and international tours brought global recognition to the guitar and shaped generations of performers.
Ioanna Kazoglou and el Bote de Luz wish to pay tribute to Andrés Segovia. Kazoglou will perform several works associated with the repertoire of the guitarist from Linares (Jaén), among them Manuel María Ponce´s (1882-1948) Prelude in E, dedicated to Segovia; Estudio sin luz, composed by Segovia himself; and Francisco Tárrega´s (1852-1909) Endecha and Oremus.
As a counterpoint, the programme includes a passage from Joaquín Rodrigo’s (1901-1999) Concierto de Aranjuez, a way of engaging in a dialogue of contrasts with Segovia’s legacy, since he never performed this concerto in public, despite it being the most renowned work in the guitar repertoire.
Kazoglou also brings us a special treat: the première of two pieces by the Málaga-born pianist and composer José Zafra, which he has transcribed for guitar especially for her.
Ioanna Kazoglou was born in Lemos, a small village in north-western Greece. At her young age, she has already toured, performed as a soloist, and given recitals from Greece to South Korea, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Italy and Germany.
Her concert is part of el Bote de Luz’s philosophy of offering artistic and cultural experiences for small audiences, where various disciplines often intertwine — in particular, photography, music, and moving images. Among these are concerts such as the Spanish guitar performances organized under the name Guitars at Sunset, where attendees can hear the artist’s breath, follow the dance of the fingers over the strings and frets, and feel the deep heartbeat of the guitar.
At the end of the performance, a complimentary glass of wine will be offered, and guests will have the opportunity to talk with the artist.
